STP for universities

Based on our rigorous research, and our work with employers, the STP offers your students and graduates the ability to prepare for a successful transition from student life to professional life.

Using the STP in your institution

Use the buttons to the right to find out how you can use the STP in your institution, or see a wide range of options in the STP brochure (button below).

If you would like to explore a package of support that isn’t listed in the attached please just get in touch to discuss your needs.

  • You can test and retest, for example prior and post placement programme or experiential learning experience, to measure progression with the transition from student to professional. This would replicate how employers are using it in graduate development programmes and provides a powerful employer-informed impact measure.

  • It can be used as a reflective development tool as part of embedded employability provision; you can then deliver tailored activities based on where the biggest gaps exist within your specific student cohorts.

  • It can be used as part of skills awards and employability programmes; it can be particularly powerful for students from Widening Participation backgrounds who can find the expectations of employers opaque and don’t have access to professionals in their personal networks to support them with the transition to professional life.

  • It can be part of the ‘promise’ for a course, department, faculty or institution to demonstrate investment in the careers of your students and support your student recruitment campaigns.

  • Workshops on the STP can be hugely beneficial for line managers of any internship programmes, be they internal to your institution or in an external SME.

Careers and employability teams are investing in their own development and expertise with STP workshops.

  • STP informed coaching, with suggested coaching questions, can support students to prepare for their transition into the world of work.

  • An STP keynote from the architect of the model, and global expert on early careers, Rebecca Fielding, make for an exceptional and thought provoking addition to any academic conference, employability symposium, or faculty away day.

  • University of Derby

“The workshop was insightful. It helped staff to understand the nuances and how conversations could be opened up with students in groups and one to one to explore topics such as imposter syndrome and company fit. These conversations then can ultimately support our students to feel more prepared to enter into the professional environment.” James Goodwin, Head of Careers and Employability

  • Aberyswyth University

“The STP has provided some valuable insights, with one-to-one coaching proving particularly impactful in identifying activities to advance both student and professional goals in the longer term. In the internship programme, students were encouraged to share their reports with supervisors to develop personal and professional goals, and learning was adjusted to support these objectives'.’ Bev Herring, Head of Careers and Employability

  • University of South Wales

“The STP tool has been a great resource for us to identify and support students transitioning into the world of work. It gives us clear, actionable insight that we can use both at an individual and programme level. We now feel far more confident in targeting our interventions where they’ll have the greatest impact.”

Laura Dutton, Graduate Transitions Consultant, University of South Wales
